We’ll know Obama’s presidency is as bad as we feared if. . .

he selects Chuck Hagel to be Secretary of Defense;

he selects Lawrence Korb to be anything.

On the other hand, there is hope for Obama’s presidency if he retains Robert Gates as Secretary of Defense.

UPDATE: When Jimmy Carter was running for president in 1976 as an “outsider,” his top aide, Hamilton Jordan, told a reporter: “”If, after the inauguration, you find a Cy Vance as secretary of state, then I would say we failed.”

Carter ended up selecting Vance to be his secretary of state. And Carter did fail.
