Only 35?
Based on internet news searches, a group called Global Language Monitor estimates that Barack Obama's inauguration enjoyed 35 times as much press coverage as President Bush's second-term ceremony in 2005.
I've been working hard for the last few days and have mostly been out of the news cycle, which was probably just as well. My main exposure to the inauguration coverage came last night, when I couldn't escape CNN at an airport gate. Still, I've seen enough over the last few days to know that our reporters, editors and news outlets have made fools of themselves over Barack Obama. No more "adversarial relationship" with the Executive Branch, no more "speaking truth to power," no more "afflicting the comfortable," not with a Democrat back in the White House! From here on, it's all cheerleading, all the time. "Give me a B!" will be the refrain, I suspect, for the next four years.
Is there a single reporter out there somewhere who is starting to feel silly, realizing that he or she swallowed the Obama hype hook, line and sinker? If so, there is no sign of it yet.
