Mark Steyn covers a lot of territory in “Clashing civilizations.” Israel’s current offensive in Gaza provides the occasion for the column, but he opens with a development in the rule of Hamas that predated the offensive: “Over in Gaza, whether or not they’re putting the Christ back in Christmas, they’re certainly putting the crucifixion back in Easter.” Then he somehow recalls Cal Thomas’s 2006 interview with Condoleezza Rice to illustrate the difficulty we have coming to grips with the reality of Islamic terror states from Gaza to Iran. I quoted Thomas’s interview with Rice at the time in “She thought she knew she was right,” but Steyn performs a service in returning it for inspection in 2009. Even in 2006 I read Rice as knowing that she was peddling tripe, which she certainly was, whether she knew it or not.
