More Tax Troubles

The Senate’s Health Education Labor and Pensions Committee abruptly canceled its scheduled hearing on the nomination of Rep. Hilda Solis as Secretary of Labor after USA Today reported that Solis’ husband paid–yesterday!–$6,400 to settle tax liens that had been outstanding against his business for as long as 16 years.

Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that administration is aware of this tax issue, but that it shouldn’t be held against Rep. Solis because “she’s not a partner in that business.” No, but she’s a partner in any profits that business makes. Her husband’s tax problem won’t prevent Solis from being confirmed, but it will add a bit to the perception (apparently justified) that there are a lot of Democrats in public life who don’t pay their taxes.
