Quite a day for Maryland sports

Today was a remarkable day for University of Maryland athletics. The men’s lacrosse team fell to the University of Virginia, the number one rated team in the country, 10-9. The game was decided in the seventh overtime period making it, according to the commentators, the longest contest in the history of men’s college lacrosse.

Meanwhile, the women’s basketball survived and advanced to the round of 8 with a remarkable come-from-behind victory over Vanderbilt. The Terps trailed by 17 points early and by 9 points with less than five minutes to play (if I recall correctly). They took their first lead in the final minute and held on to win 78-74.

Marissa Coleman willed Maryland to the victory playing the best game I’ve ever seen by a women’s college basketball player and (Bill Walton aside) as good a NCAA tournament game as I can remember seeing from a player of either gender. Coleman scored 42 points, grabbed 15 rebounds, and successfully guarded Vandy’s top scorer down the stretch.

Unfortunately, the game revealed why Maryland is unlikely to win the National Championship and would be hard-pressed to do so even if Connecticut were not such so dominant this year. Coleman and fellow super-star Kristi Tolliver produced all but 19 of Maryland’s points. Although Dee Liles is a more than useful player, Maryland continues to look basically like a two-woman team that takes a few too many plays off on the defensive end..
