Congratulations to Manchester United for winning its third consecutive English Premier League title. They secured the title by drawing at home yesterday against Arsenal. Man U has now pulled even Liverpool for the most English soccer championships – 18. But the Red Shite hasn’t finished atop the league since 1990.
United has already won two lesser competitions (the League Cup and the FIFA World Club Cup) this season and will play for the Champions League crown, i.e. the European club championship, later this month. But Man U will not complete an unprecedented trophy sweep because they lost to Everton in the semi-finals of the FA Cup. It should be noted, however, that United did not field its top team for that encounter and still was still a bit unlucky not to prevail.
Speaking of Everton, we eased into fifth place yesterday (with one match to go) by defeating West Ham 3-1. Louis Saha scored twice, just as he did when we beat West Ham earlier in the season by the same score. This means that the oft-injured Saha has netted four of his six goals this season against West Ham. It also means that Saha is in-form right now. That’s good news since he is the only available striker we have who might ask questions of Chelsea’s defense in the FA Cup final in two weeks .
