Wanted: One Funny Comedian

Wanda Sykes, who apparently bills herself as a comedian, was the featured speaker at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Saturday night. She took the opportunity to lash out at Republicans, including Rush Limbaugh. Here she recycles liberal anti-Limbaugh talking points that, when combined with the hope that Limbaugh will die of kidney failure, she evidently considers to be “jokes.”

This footage, from CSpan, is interesting because it shows President Obama’s reaction to Sykes’ tirade. In the Telegraph, Toby Harnden, who was present, writes:

[W]hat was President Barack Obama thinking when he laughed and smiled as the comedienne wished Rush Limbaugh dead?

I guess that’s Obama’s “new era of civility” in action. I don’t want to be too hard on Obama, but, knowing how mean-spirited many of his fellow liberals are, he should have been prepared for this sort of incident and avoided joining in the “fun” of wishing a political opponent dead.

As for Sykes: is there not a single comedian left in America who is funny? I don’t watch Comedy Central, Saturday Night Live, etc., so maybe there is all kinds of hilarity extant that I’m not seeing. But why does it seem that every time a so-called comedian winds up in the public eye, he or she is exhibiting hatred, not a sense of humor?
