He couldn't take us with him

Another Gitmo detainee, the fifth, has committed suicide. Based on Thomas Joscelyn's discussion of Muhammad Ahmad Abdallah Salih, it's likely that the main consequence of his detention was that when he killed himself, he took no one with him.
