A Sad Day

July 7, 2009 Posted by John at 1:39 PM

Al Franken was sworn in as a United States Senator a couple of hours ago. It's hard to imagine that anyone as unqualified by experience and temperament as Franken has been a Senator during our modern history. The Associated Press begins its account:

Al Franken became a senator on Tuesday, completing the transformation from comedian to politician.

That remains to be seen. Amy Klobuchar, Minnesota's other Senator, introduced Franken:

"He's demonstrated to Minnesotans that he takes his new job seriously," she said.

I'm trying, unsuccessfully, to remember the last time the public needed to be assured that a new Senator takes his job seriously. It could be a long six years.

PAUL adds: A long five-and-a-half years, you mean.
