The Cure That Makes the Disease Worse

Congressional Budget Director Douglas Elmendorf testified today before the Senate Budget Committee that the Democrats’ various health care proposals will increase, not reduce, federal government spending on health care:

Congressional Budget Office Director Douglas Elmendorf warned lawmakers the legislation that he has seen so far would raise costs, not lower them. Elmendorf was asked by Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad, D-N.D., if the bills Congress is considering would “bend the cost curve.” The budget director responded: “The curve is being raised.”

Elmendorf also offered this graph, which shows the CBO’s projections under baseline and alternative scenarios for the amount of federal debt owned by the public, as a percentage of GDP; click to enlarge:

It should be noted that the baseline scenario assumes massive tax increases. The extent of the fiscal malpractice being committed by the Democrats in Washington can hardly be comprehended.
