What Jewish State?

The Palestinians’ “moderate” faction, Fatah, is set to reaffirm its refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish state, according to AFP:

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah faction will reaffirm its refusal to recognise Israel as a Jewish state at a major congress next week, according to a document obtained by AFP on Saturday.
The congress document also reiterates the refusal of the Palestinian leadership to resume peace talks with Israel as long as it continues building Jewish settlements in Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank. …
In the document Fatah underlines “its refusal to recognise Israel as a Jewish state” as demanded by Israel’s hardline Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Fatah links this refusal to its determination to protect the right of Palestinian refugees to return to homes they fled at the time of the creation of Israel in 1948.

So, let’s parse this out. Israel can’t be a Jewish state, but the surrounding Arab states can be, and are, Muslim countries that drive out substantially all the Jews who once lived there. Jews can’t build homes–“settlements”–in east Jerusalem, but Arabs can build anywhere in the city, and do, all the time. Jews can’t move to areas that are occupied mostly or largely by Arabs, but Arabs have a right to “return” to places where most of them have never lived.
This is, obviously, a recipe for destroying the state of Israel and driving Jews out of the region. I guess we should be grateful that these “moderates” are still in power, more or less, on the West Bank.
