Bill Clinton says that a week does not go by that he doesn’t think of former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, and miss him terribly. Do you believe that? I don’t.
Cllinton also says he often thinks that if Rabin had not been killed, “we would have had peace within three years.” Do you believe that? I believe Clinton often has this self-serving thought.
The truth of the underlying proposition is another matter. It implies that the failure to achieve peace is due largely or entirely to a failure of Israeli leadership. That’s an untenable position and one that I doubt even Clinton would explicitly embrace.
Would Rabin have offered a better deal than the one Arafat turned down near the end of Clinton’s presidency? Not likely.
