Mea Maxima Culpa

As regular readers know, I am a fan of beautiful women, most notably my wife, but extending also to contestants in the Miss Universe and Miss World competitions, who I think deserve considerable respect. So, when I miss the occasional conjunction between politics and pulchritude, readers are likely to notice.
Hence this email, received today from a well-known reader:

Are you, like me, getting a little tired of doing John Hinderaker’s job for him? I think the nine days we’ve given him should have been plenty to post something, SOMETHING, on the newly elected President of Costa Rica–Laura Chinchilla, who is also a social conservative. The gringo neglect to our Latino and Latina neighbors in Minnesota is a little embarrassing I must say. Oh, just in case you needed a face with a name, here she is:

This prompted an even more virulent response from the first reader’s boss, a rather well-known radio talk show host:

What a name. What a girl. What a flop Hinderaker is.

Ouch. What can I say? One can only reproduce this reader’s account of Ms. Chinchilla’s political views:

According to Reuters:
* Chinchilla has promised to continue Arias’s liberalizing economic policies and expand Costa Rica’s web of free trade agreements. She has also backed liberalization of Costa Rica’s state-controlled electricity and telecommunications sectors.
* Married with a teenage son, Chinchilla is a social conservative, opposing gay marriage, abortion and any change to Roman Catholicism’s position as the state religion. Supporters regaled her with rosaries during her campaign, including one she wears constantly for good luck.
* During the campaign Chinchilla said she would boost education spending to 8 percent of gross domestic product as well as increase funding for law enforcement and create an anti-drug czar to oversee the growing struggle against drug smugglers who are using Costa Rica as a transit route.

Sounds like a good, conservative program. Our reader, who has some experience in czardom, writes:

May I apply for the anti-drug czar position?

All I can add is one more photo of Ms. Chinchilla:
