The Canadian women’s hockey team won a gold medal at the Winter Olympics yesterday, defeating the U.S. 2-0. About half an hour after their victory, the Canadian players returned to the ice. Still in uniform and wearing their gold medals, they swigged from bottles of champagne and cans of beer, and smoked cigars.
The old farts at the IOC were not amused. Gilbert Felli, the IOC’s executive director of the Olympic Games, said it was “not what we want to see.” He intends to “investigate what happened.”
Steve Keough, a spokesman for the Canadian Olympic Committee, expressed a more reasonable view. “In terms of the actual celebration, it’s not exactly something uncommon in Canada,” he pointed out.
He’s right. It’s not as if team members made politically incorrect statements about Islam’s growing influence in the West.
In light of the hockey team’s victory celebration, the IOC might be getting nervous about the 2016 Summer Games where, I understand, women’s Rugby Sevens will make its debut.
UPDATE: During the medal ceremony itself, the Canadian team sang along lustily with the crowd in a stirring version of “O Canada.” Great stuff. And the Canadian crowd cheered robustly for the Americans after some of the players acknowledged them. The crowd even chanted “U.S.A.”
I suppose that will have to be investigated too.
