Rubio For Senate

Florida Governor Charlie Crist apparently will bolt the Republican Party tomorrow to run for the Senate as an independent. Crist views this as preferable, evidently, to being thumped in the Republican primary by Marco Rubio. Crist started the race as a prohibitive favorite, but has steadily lost ground to the more charismatic and more conservative Rubio, former Speaker of the Florida House. I’ve been impressed by Rubio in the couple of conference calls I’ve been on with him, and Florida’s voters are obviously impressed as well. Rubio now leads Crist around two to one among Republican voters.
Poll data suggest that Crist could be competitive in a three-way race as an independent. I’m skeptical, but let’s not take any chances. This kind of disloyalty to the Republican Party can’t be rewarded. And if he wins this Senate race, Rubio should be a leader of the conservative movement for many years to come.
