Shall the Israelis commit suicide?

“Shall we all commit suicide?” is the title of a prescient Winston Churchill essay on modernity. Listening to President Obama last night on Larry King (video below, via) his voice dripping with hostility to Israel, one wonders what the Israelis are to do. Shall the Israelis commit suicide?
Perhaps the most transparent element of Obama administration foreign policy is its animus against Israel. She is an inconvenient former ally. To his usual obtuseness, which was on full display last night, Obama adds this: “I think Turkey can have a positive voice in this whole process.”
The video comes via The Right Scoop, which comments that Israel acted stupidly [see the Right Scoop’s clarification in the update]. In retrospect the operation should have been planned on the understanding that the Israeli commandos were likely to be attacked. Read this Jerusalem Post account of the commandos landing on the Mavi Marmara. I infer that they were surprised by the reception awaiting them.
It seems likely — see Bruce Kesler’s post on the Washington Post story — that the Obama administration played a role in dumbing down the Israeli operation. If the Israeli planners of the operation had known what was confronting them on the Mavi Marmara, I doubt that paintball guns would have been the commados’ first line of defense.
Although the Israelis succeeded in seizing the ships, the terrorist operation succeeded in provoking the terrorists’ desired response, including Obama’s below. The Right Scoop’s comment is right on: “Our president is a joke.”

How is Israel to defend itself? The various alternatives have been ruled out one at a time by “the international community,” as Charles Krauthammer demonstrates today in his weekly Washington Post column. Krauthammer titles the column “Israel, disarmed.” The Seattle Times headlines the column “The Israelis refuse to commit suicide.” The Seattle Times headline leads me to reflect that on this point, the Israelis are obviously out of step with Obama administration policy.
UPDATE: Brian writes from The Right Scoop to clarify his comment that Israel acted stupidly: “I wasn’t speaking for myself, but for the president, considering the time when he suggested the police acted stupidly in Cambridge and then noted he didn’t have all the facts. I have clarified my post to reflect that more accurately.”
