A love supreme

During the campaign it was noted that tens of thousands of dollars came in to the Obama campaign from a Hamas-controlled camp in Gaza. Pamela Geller observed that Al-Jazeera actually ran a story on Obama phone banks in Gaza (video below).
Geller discovered one large contributor to the Obama campaign (Monir Edwan) who was listed on FEC documents as contributing to Obama from the city of Rafah in the state GA. “If you were reading quickly,” Geller wrote, “you might have thought it was just a contribution from Georgia. But there is no city of Rafah in the Peach State. Monir Edwan sent money to Obama from Rafah, Gaza.”
Edwan also sold Obama t-shirts that the campaign had sent him in Gaza and turned a tidy profit. “Some young men,” Edwan explained, “even bought the T-shirts for 60 shekel ($17.29), which is a lot to spend in Gaza on a t-shirt, but that is how much Gazans like Obama.” Indeed, Edwan and his brother contributed more than $30,000 to the Obama campaign in late 2007 through bulk purchases of the t-shirts shipped to Gaza.

Given the fact that Hamas rules Gaza with an iron fist, one might deduce that Hamas supported Obama’s election. That inference was corroborated in the spring of 2008 when we found that Hamas endorsed Obama. Appearing on WABC radio, Hamas adviser Ahmed Yousef declared: “We like Mr. Obama and we hope he will win the election.” Why? “He has a vision to change America.” Yousef seemed to have a pretty good fix on one of the meanings of Obama’s ambiguous references to “change.”
Hamas’s love of Obama endures. Now comes Amir Taheri to report on the latest installment of the story. Taheri reports that the slogan “Abu Hussain! Palestine loves you!!!” appears in English on a poster and other products produced by Hamas and put on sale in Gaza. Yeseterday it was depicted on the front pages of several leading Arab dailies. The New York Post illustration below shows a coffee mug with the mug of “Abu Hussain.”

Taheri argues that Hamas’s love for Obama is based on a misunderstanding, but Taheri sells Hamas short. I think Hamas views Obama as a useful idiot whose heart is in the right place.
