One guy named Mo

After taking a leave from the scene to attend to some health issues, Mark Steyn has returned in a big way. He sat in for Rush on Monday and had a few comments about Detroit and the Chrysler Super Bowl ad (“the braggadoccio of the brain dead”). The Blog Prof has posed a clip of Mark’s remarks on Rush here. Mark also provides an update on the case of Muzzammil “Mo” Hassan. Hassan chopped off his wife’s head, and then claimed it was because she’d been abusing him. “This was not in Yemen or Waziristan,” Mark notes, “but in Buffalo. Despite the chutzpah (if he’ll forgive the expression) of his defense, yesterday the jury took less than an hour to find him guilty of murder.”
Hassan represented himself at trial. CBS News reports that he concluded his two-hour long closing argument with: “I don’t blame my wife.” Hassan was found guilty of second degree murder; sentencing has been set for March 9. Time in prison is too good for this guy. Having considered the evidence, one juror commented: “I hope he rots in hell.”
I vaguely recall Mark’s earlier columns on the case, but I hadn’t heard anything about the verdict this week. Mark comments on the verdict: “I am relieved that an American jury is not as mired in cultural sensitivity’ as our leaders. Even so: Matthew Shepard was hung on a fence in Wyoming – and ever since there have been plays and TV movies and pop songs memorializing him. Aasiya Hassan had her head chopped off in Buffalo. How many playwrights and pop stars will tell her story?”
