Maybe my favorite line from G.K. Chesterton comes from the beginning of chapter 4 of Orthodoxy (“The Ethics of Elfland”):
As much as I ever did, more than I ever did, I believe in Liberalism. But there was a rosy time of innocence when I believed in Liberals.
Come to think of it, this could serve as the motto for Power Line, except that the Power Line Old Guard has adopted he more robust line from Churchill (“Arise and take our stand for freedom as in the olden time”—extra credit if you can name the speech this came from without using Google). Almost every day I wake up and find examples of the hypocrisy and/or stupidity of modern liberals on the front page of the paper. Today’s first nominee might well be the continuing refusal of the Democrats in Congress to ratify our free trade treaties with central America. Canada—liberal Canada—has passed theirs, and as such its wheat farmers are enjoying growing sales to Colombia while our wheat exports are suffering because Colombian tariffs on U.S. wheat are still in place. (As Glenn Reynolds notes, “Funny, I don’t remember any press coverage about this during Obama’s midwest tour.”}
Though probably the most snort-worthy story of the whole week is the latest climate change scare: global warming may cause space aliens to dislike us! Wish I had time to go full Mark Steyn on this one, but alas today is a travel day, and I have to head off to the airport now to spend time with my pals at the TSA and on the airlines going back to the East Coast. So you’ll just have to supply your own punch lines to this theme and these stories in the comments section. Maybe later today I can come back to this one.
