Not Even Unions Trust Unions!

I had no idea that people who work for unions have unions of their own, until this piece by Professor Jacobson at Legal Insurrection appeared. Prof. Jacobson documents the disaster that has befallen Wisconsin’s public sector unions in the wake of the popular revolt against their excessive power:

If you want a good measure of how deeply the collective bargaining bill in Wisconsin has disrupted public sector unions, there is no better example than the Wisconsins Education Association Council (WEAC).

Last month WEAC announced that it was laying off 40% of its staff. With little over which to collectively bargain, and with dues no longer withheld from paychecks, the need for and sustainability of a union bureaucracy could not be justified.

Now WEAC is being boycotted by National Staff Organization (NSO), a union representing educational union employees.

Isn’t that great, education union employees have their own union? Is there a union for employees of education union employee unions?

This is actually rather hysterical: the NSO has announced a boycott of the Wisconsin Education Association Council because that union is unfair to union labor! You can’t make this stuff up. Unions exist, in today’s world, only to the extent that people are forced to join them and to the extent that dues are forcibly withdrawn from their paychecks. Few people in their right mind would choose to join or financially support a union. Of course, in the Age of Obama, even if you are in your right mind the federal government isn’t, so the Left is bringing all possible pressure to bear on behalf of union bosses. The problem is that the concentrated power of the federal government isn’t enough to overcome the will of the people.
