Smart diplomacy alert

Based on a Times (UK) report that I can’t find online, the news this morning is that the United States has approved a plan to let the Taliban open a “political headquarters” in Qatar. The Daily Mail story reports: “The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is likely to open a base in Qatar before Christmas, The Times said.” Further: “The Gulf state is believed to have agreed to let the group have a base after Washington decided that it should be located away from the influence of Pakistan.”

I hesitate to say more until some reliable report confirms that the Obama administration actually supports this scheme. At this point I will only say that, if true, I suppose we have to be happy that the administration hasn’t invited the Taliban to set up shop in the United States.
