When Barack Obama clinched the Democratic presidential nomination in June 2008, he marked it with — what else? — a speech. Speaking at the Xcel Center in St. Paul, Obama asserted that his ascent would be seen (among other things) as “the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal[.]” He famously portrayed himself as a messianic figure who had come to redeem the time.
The St. Paul speech only made manifest what is implicit in much of Obama’s presentation of himself. How could Obama have brought himself to utter such laughable pap? This is either one politician who takes himself way too seriously, or who holds his supporters in incredibly low esteem, or both.
The enactment of Obamacare notwithstanding, even Obama must know he proved to be a false messiah. He has now taken to a bus tour of Virginia and North Carolina as part of an incredibly thinly disguised campaign tour on which he is touting Son of Stimulus. Yesterday he said this:
“My plan says we’re going to put teachers back in the classroom, construction workers back to work rebuilding America, rebuilding our schools, tax cuts for small businesses, tax cuts for hiring veterans, tax cuts if you give your worker a raise. That’s my plan. Then you’ve got [the Republicans’] plan, which is, let’s have dirtier air, dirtier water, less people with health insurance.”
Yeah, if only! He must think his supporters in the audience and, for that matter, the media, are morons.
Whereas he presented himself as a messiah in 2008, this time around he’s something like a clove of garlic, warding off the vampires. It must be a bit of a comedown.
That bus Obama is using is the one made in Canada that was originally rolled out last summer. At least we’re getting our money’s worth out of the thing. It reminds me of the “Magic Bus” by the Who, a song that was a staple of their live act. The B side of the single, coincidentally, was “Someone’s Coming.”
