Who’s Obsessed?

Yesterday, along with millions of others, I got a fundraising appeal from Barack Obama’s campaign manager. The email was titled “They’re obsessed.” It began:

In just about 24 hours, Mitt Romney is headed to a hotel ballroom to give a speech sponsored by Americans for Prosperity, a front group founded and funded by the Koch brothers.

AFP is a grass roots organization with close to two million activist-participants. I believe that at least one of the Koch brothers is among AFP’s more than 50,000 contributors, but to call the group a “front group” for the Koch brothers is silly.

Those are the same Koch brothers whose business model is to make millions by jacking up prices at the pump….

Even President Obama, with his limited understanding of economics, must know how dumb this is. Koch Industries pays the market price for crude oil, refines it, and sells it at the market price. The idea that Koch somehow has the power to “make millions by jacking up prices at the pump” could only be believed by the very ignorant.

And, by the way–didn’t Obama just tell us yesterday that skyrocketing gas prices are the result of turmoil in the Middle East, and therefore beyond our control?

…and who have bankrolled Tea Party extremism and committed $200 million to try to destroy President Obama before Election Day.

The idea that the Tea Party has been “bankrolled” by anyone is an ongoing fantasy of the Left. Liberals are so used to union-funded astroturf that they can’t believe anyone would get active in politics out of principle. As for the $200 million and the part about “destroy[ing] President Obama,” they just made that up. It is a helpful lie, however, to make sure that Obama raises the intended $1 billion for his re-election campaign.

So in the hours before Romney courts two men obsessed with making Barack Obama a one-term president, let’s see how many of us can chip in to the Two-Term Fund.

Ah yes, now we get to the point. But how are the Koch brothers “obsessed” with Barack Obama? They have been donating to conservative and libertarian causes, as well as other charities, for decades. The obsession appears to run in the other direction.

Here’s what Mitt Romney told his supporters just after his victory in the Florida GOP primary:

“We must not forget what this election is really about: defeating Barack Obama.”

Pitch in $190 or more over the next 24 hours to show that, while that message may fire up two oil-industry billionaires, it’s also one that plenty of us are tired of hearing.

One gets the impression that Romney wouldn’t have figured out that the point of the 2012 election is to defeat Obama without the brothers’ help.

No American president has ever singled out private citizens who disagree with him and sought to demonize them in this manner. Mitt Romney has said that Obama is a nice guy who has no idea what he is doing as president, but the evidence shows that this characterization is too generous. Obama’s partisan divisiveness is mean-spirited and vicious.
