I’ve mentioned here before Roger Scruton’s interesting and provocative new book, How to Think Seriously About the Planet: The Case for an Environmental Conservatism, just out from Oxford University Press. Roger’s views are not conventional, and here and there I think he’s a bit on the wrong track. But where he’s good, he’s really good. I’ll have a complete review of the book soon in National Review, but for now I’ll just share one sentence from the Preface that offers a signal of how his perspective differs from the conventional wisdom:
I defend local initiatives against global schemes, civil association against political activism, and small-scale institutions of friendship against large-scale and purpose-driven campaigns.
