The McCaskill miasma, cont’d

We’ve been following the case of the mysterious missing Democrats from the party convention in Charlotte that will renominate Barack Obama as its standard bearer this fall. Prominent among the Democrats who hope to help the voters forget what they have seen with their own eyes is one Claire McCaskill, the Democratic Senator and formerly proud Obama supporter from Missouri. Oh, and did I mention that she’s running for reelection (against a GOP opponent yet to be determined)?

On Morning Joe earlier this week, McCaskill explained that her decision to skip the national convention in Charlotte has nothing to do with a desire to distance herself from Obama or from her own vote in favor of Obamacare. Not at all. She always stays home to campaign when she is in a contested election. Joe Scarborough saluted McCaskill for her brilliance, which means, I guess, that even he wasn’t exactly buying her explanation.

The local NBC outlet in Columbia, Missouri, actually tried to reach McCaskill after the Supreme Court decision mostly upholding Obamacare. The news segment (video below) not only took note of McCaskill’s decision to skip the Democratic National Convention, it also mentioned the New York Times report that, despite her public statements to the contrary, McCaskill privately lobbied the White House against holding the convention in St Louis because she was concerned about how it could affect her campaign. Now that is brilliant.
