The mugged and the non-mugged

Sheldon Adelson, the Las Vegas tycoon, is giving $10 million to the pro-Romney PAC Restore Our Future. Adelson supported Newt Gingrich during the primary season, reportedly contributing $21 million to the former Speaker’s campaign. According to Politico, Adelson has set aside $100 million for this campaign cycle.

Adelson is said to be the eighth richest man in the world. He started out as a Democrat, but switched parties. I’ve read that the switch followed business-related clashes with unions in the 1980s. This would mean that it also followed the instructive experience of living through the Carter and Reagan presidencies.

It seems clear that, like many of us, Adelson was mugged by reality.

His generous contribution to the pro-Romney PAC means that President Obama’s loyal supporters in Hollywood probably will feel compelled to hold some more lavish fundraisers. Being actors and such, they are immune to muggings by reality.
