The AP story on Israel’s purported intelligence threat to the United States — a story that is linked on Drudge — reads to me like an assault on Israel emanating from the upper reaches of the Obama administration and like minded supporters. According to the AP, with attribution to “current and former US officials,” Israel is the “number 1 counterintelligence threat” to the CIA’s Near East Division.

If the AP story is true, we can be relieved that, unlike several other states of the Near East, Israel is — how to put it? — no threat to the United States. On the other hand, I doubt that the story is true. The Times of Israel reports:

In an unusually brief SMS message to Israeli journalists, the media advisers of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wrote: “In response to the report about the CIA, the Prime Minister’s Office states that this [is] a false report.”

I wouldn’t necessarily take the statement at face value, but you have to wonder what is going on here.
