Busted: The apology

When Charles Krauthammer observed in his weekly Washington Post column this past Friday that Obama had begun his presidency by removing the bust of Winston Churchill from the Oval Office and returning it to the British embassy, White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer went ballistic. He vehemently denied that Obama had done so and accused Krauthammer of retailing a falsehood.

The truth was pointed out to Pfeiffer during the day on Friday, yet he gave little ground in a grudging update to his vituperative post. He continued to insist that the return of the bust was “an urban legend.”

Today, however, after Krauthammer’s request for for an apology, Pfeiffer reports that he has given it up.

In an apologetic message to Krauthammer Pfeiffer more or less concedes that he didn’t know what he was talking about. He was confused. He apparently wasn’t much following the news back in 2009, which in any event must feel something like ancient history to an Obama administration spokesman.
