Gunpowder and Lead

Heart-warming stories of armed self-defense are popping up all the time. This one comes from Alabama:

Martha Lewis of Dora, Ala. told WVTM-TV it was about 3 a.m. Tuesday morning when she heard a loud noise, which turned out to be someone kicking in her door. Lewis said she called the police and grabbed her gun, then went to her daughters’ room and told them each to get something to defend themselves with. She said one grabbed an ax and one got a butcher knife.

Heh. A North Carolina gun blog comments:

When momma’s got a gun and her two daughters can quickly lay their hands on a butcher knife and an axe, you’ve become the very definition of “failure in the victim selection process.”

Yes. The failure went downhill from there:

Ignoring her warnings, the man kept coming — and that’s when Lewis said she fired. …

The man stumbled outside into the yard where police found him, WVTM reported. Police said he’s 25-year-old Michael Jacobs and was hospitalized in stable condition.

Lewis told the station one of the responding police officers said it would have been a different situation if she hadn’t been armed. “One of them said we would be writing up a different report if she had not had that gun,” Lewis said.

Burglars aren’t generally afraid of the police, but they do fear armed homeowners. This one should consider himself lucky that he was dispatched before the daughters’ ax and butcher knife came into play.

Via Glenn Reynolds, who adds:

Honestly, when you decide to stage a home invasion in Alabama, you’ve already made a big mistake.

That goes double for my home state of South Dakota, where shotguns are ubiquitous, and home breakins are virtually unknown.
