The Genius of Colin Powell

For a while there yesterday I was gnashing my teeth about Colin Powell’s endorsement of Obama, and spent a lot of time trying to come up with a revised definition of the Powell Doctrine (force as a last resort, and then used in overwhelming quantity–yawn. . .), since the new Powell-Obama Doctrine would seem to be something like all drone and no predator.  Really, what to make of Powell’s comment that “Obama got us out of one war while not getting us into any new ones”?  I guess Powell buys the Libya as a “kinetic action” line.  I can see it now: a whole new line of Powell-inspired G.I. Joe “kinetic action” figures as Christmas gifts at Montessori schools everywhere.

But I appraised the genius of Powell’s endorsement when I saw Chris Matthews’ reaction to it: “Do we really want to go back to people who got us into war in Iraq?”  I’m sure by this Matthews means that a President Romney would be Bush III, but might this not work even better on those lefty voters who see Obama as Bush III?  If the person who sold the Iraq War at the UN is now selling us Obama, I can see another hundred thousand votes going to the Green and Libertarian Party candidates.  It’s right out of the Rush Limbaugh “Operation Chaos” playbook.  Powell may have just won Wisconsin for Romney.

Well played, General Powell, well played.  Maybe President George W. Bush should say something nice about Obama, too, just to see heads explode on MSBNC.
