Senator Ted Cruz

Ted Cruz joined the Senate today, and oh my, what a welcome addition he is. Please take a moment to read his op-ed in the Washington Post, called “What the GOP should stand for: Opportunity.”

Cruz calls for Republicans to adopt “opportunity conservatism.” This means conceptualizing and articulating every domestic policy “with a single-minded focus on easing the ascent up the economic ladder.” For example:

Don’t just say no to new taxes — fundamentally reform the tax code so that every American can file his taxes on a postcard. Eliminate the corporate welfare and complexity that enrich only accountants and lawyers.

Don’t just criticize union bosses; explain how closed shops confiscate wages and make it harder for low-skilled workers to get jobs.

Don’t talk generically about education; advocate school choice to empower parents and expand opportunity for children struggling to get ahead.

Don’t just dwell on the long-term solvency of Social Security; promote personal accounts to allow low-income Americans to accumulate wealth and pass it on to future generations.

Like Tom Cotton in the House, Cruz’s stellar reputation precedes him to Washington. This explains his choice committee assignments, including Judiciary, Commerce, Armed Services, and Rules.

Is it too early to start thinking about a Ted Cruz-Tom Cotton ticket down the road? Actually, it is. But I can’t help myself.

JOHN adds: It’s too early for Cruz-Cotton, but it’s not too early to be thinking about Rubio-Somebody for 2016. Marco does a better job than anyone else of carrying out Cruz’s vision of an opportunity party, I think.
