Giving them the rope

Lenin supposedly said that “The capitalists will sell us the rope with which to hang them,” though William Safire was dubious about the authenticity of the quote. (Lenin might have said that the capitalists will “close their eyes to the above-mentioned reality and will thus transform themselves into men who are deaf, dumb and blind.”)

Barack Obama isn’t much of a capitalist, and he has nothing so crass in mind as selling our enemies the rope. Giving it away is more like it.

How to explain our provision of F-16s to the Muslim Brotherhood regime in Egypt? Obama and the deep thinkers around him must think that they can make friends of the Muslim Brotherhood. It’s an incredibly obtuse idea, but it’s the charitable explanation for our action. Will somebody please get these folks a copy of The Looming Tower?

Andy McCarthy isn’t banging on Team Obama for its obtuseness. He takes that as a given. In his weekly NRO column, Andy is banging on the Republican Senators who support Team Obama in giving the F-16s to Team Morsi: “Nearly two-thirds of Senate Republicans went with the Brothers.”

But why? I have yet to hear a good explanation. Do they think that Morsi has not taken control of the Egyptian military? Do they think that the Egyptian military will serve as a counterweight to Morsi? Let’s hear what they have to say and let’s examine the evidence. Perhaps a staffer for one of the GOP Senators named by Andy will favor us with the courtesy of a reply.
