Robert Menendez’s Foreign Relations

There is a certain irony to the fact that Robert Menendez has just become the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Menendez has been making news for the wrong sort of foreign relations: sex with underage prostitutes in the Dominican Republic. You probably know this, because you don’t depend on the liberal media for your news. The allegation, which was uncovered by The Daily Caller, is pretty grim:

“That senator also likes the youngest and newest girls,” the woman wrote on April 21, 2012, according to an English translation provided to The Daily Caller by a native Spanish speaker. …

The DC is not disclosing the woman’s name because she may have been a minor when her alleged sexual encounters with Menendez occurred. Four different Spanish speakers who reviewed The DC’s translation of her letter all said her Spanish writing indicated someone who was very young and unsophisticated. …

That young prostitute [i.e., a second one] said she had sex with Menendez “three times at least” in 2009. “The first one in February, and then in May and June. I recall his visit in June so well because that month was my 17th birthday.”

Which would mean that Menendez hired the girl twice when she was 16 years old. You might think this is one of the juiciest scandals ever, but you would be wrong. To my knowledge, not a single feminist activist has commented on it. Coverage in the Democratic Party media has been subdued, to put it mildly. The New York Times mentioned the allegations in a brief story that highlighted Menendez’s denials:

In a statement, the senator called the allegations involving prostitutes “false” and “manufactured by a politically-motivated right-wing blog.” The senator’s office said Wednesday night that Mr. Menendez had reimbursed Dr. Melgen $58,500 for two flights that he had taken aboard his private jet in 2010.

The senator also called Dr. Melgen “a friend and political supporter.”

Dr. Melgen told The New York Times last week, “I can assure you that all of the allegations are false.”

So ends the Times account. Will the Menendez scandal have legs? Not if the Democratic Party media have anything to say about it. Don’t expect any reporters to descend on the Dominican Republic to interview teenage girls and try to get the facts. It won’t happen. That’s just one of the many advantages of being a Democrat.
