Dartmouth contemplates hitting a new low

Charlotte Johnson, Dartmouth’s Dean of the College, says that Dartmouth is considering a distributive requirement or some sort of mandatory course focused on diversity and inclusion. Clearly, Johnson has in mind a course that touts the value of diversity and inclusion.

But wait. Dartmouth grants racial preferences to ensure that its undergraduate population is “diverse” and “inclusive.” And by all accounts, including my daughter’s, Dartmouth succeeds in creating a racially and ethnically diverse student body.

Thus, all Dartmouth students are in a position to judge for themselves the value of diversity and the extent to which its virtues may be offset by disadvantages, if any. Preaching about diversity to these students is not only a fool’s errand; it’s an insult to their intelligence.

In this context, “diversity” is like a joke. If you have to explain it, it hasn’t worked.
