Harry Reid Politicizes Marine Accident

When Harry Reid told reporters he had heard a rumor that Mitt Romney didn’t pay any taxes, I thought he had sunk as low as a politician possibly can. But I was wrong. Today, Reid outdid himself. He politicized the tragic death of seven Marines in a mortar accident by linking the accident to the sequester:

Details are emerging. We really don’t know, the area has been blocked off. As I indicated, it was quite a big explosion. … It’s very important we continue training our military, so important. But one of the things in sequester is we cut back in training and maintenance. That’s the way sequester was written. Now, the bill that’s on the floor, we hope to pass today helps that a little bit. … This sequester should go away. We have cut already huge amounts of money in deficit reduction. It’s just not appropriate, Mr. President, that our military can’t train and do the maintenance necessary.

So is Reid trying to claim that the sequester caused the accident? A mortar shell exploded; the cause is not yet known. But to attribute the explosion to the sequester would be insane. Or is Reid not actually claiming that the sequester was responsible for the fatal accident, but just…linking the two? It is hard to tell, but that interpretation would be consistent with Reid’s sliminess.

We always knew that over the coming months, the Democrats will try to blame anything bad that happens–airport delays, no more White House tours, canceling the Easter Egg roll–on the sequester, a measly 2% reduction in the growth of federal spending. Is Reid’s slander so over the top that it will cause public revulsion and discredit the Democrats’ whining? It should, but it probably won’t.
