Ingrates

Were it not for a a single post at the Weekly Standard, Michelle Obama and John Kerry would have presented the International Women of Courage Award to Samira Ibrahim on Friday afternoon. This despite the fact that Ibrahim is a raging anti-Semite and celebrant of 9/11, including the Islamist observation of the anniversary at the American embassy in Cairo this past September.

In Washington for the ceremony, Ibrahim first pleaded that the offending statements in her Twitter account resulted from hacking. She may be a woman of courage, but she is both a hater and a liar.

When the State Department deferred the award to Ibrahim to look into the matter, Ibrahim took took to Twitter to demonstrate the brand of courage that we were about to award: “I refuse to apologize to the Zionist lobby in America regarding my previous anti-Zionist statements under pressure from American government therefore they withdrew the award.”

Our friends at the Weekly Standard saved the Obama administration and the United States from the gross humiliation of having conferred honor upon Ibrahim. Even so, the flap will make her a star in the eyes of our enemies, but it could have been worse.

Has anyone in the Obama administration reached out to thank the Standard for the service it has performed? I asked Standard editor Bill Kristol. He writes in response to my inquiry: “Ha, thanks — awaiting their thank you call!”

The Standard is nevertheless owed our thanks and we hereby extend it.
