George Jones, RIP

Country singer George Jones died this past Friday at the age of 81. I think the consensus is that Jones was the best country singer of the era. You can certainly hear his influence in just about every younger country artist worth listening to.

Jon Pareles gives Jones his due in the New York Times obit “His life was a country song.” Pareles renders a fine appreciation of Jones’s life and art.

Hillbilly at Harvard compiles obituaries here and here, and adds notes of interest here and here (guest post by Steve Bartlett). The video below catches Jones singing the utterly classic weeper “He Stopped Loving Her Today.” RIP.
