Sunday morning coming down

I saluted singer/songwriter Shawn Colvin in “If these walls…” as she was about to visit the Dakota Jazz Club and Restaurant in Minneapolis earlier this year. By my lights she is a gifted artist. In the video below Shawn is joined by Mary-Chapin Carpenter on Merle Haggard’s “That’s the Way Love Goes.”

Haggard is of course a national treasure. He should be named America’s poet laureate while he is still around to enjoy the honor. This I believe!

Hag won a Grammy in 1985 for his vocal on “That’s The Way Love Goes,” but I never really understood the song until I heard Colvin and Carpenter on the version below yesterday online via a WUMB Etown rebroadcast of a show deriving from the Colvin-Carpenter tour that brought Shawn to Minneapolis on a side trip to the Dakota in March. The ladies seem to me to find a note of heartbreak that deepens this beautiful song.

UPDATE: Our commenter gently notes below that I have misattributed the composition of the the song to Hag. It was composed by Lefty Frizzell and Whitey Shafer. I regret the error. With this correction duly noted, I stand by my story!
