Before endorsing a vote in favor of congressional authorization of military action against Syria, Elliott Abrams outlines a devastating indictment of President Obama’s treatment of the related issues in the Politico column “How not to run a foreign policy.” Abrams indicts Obama both for dishonesty and incompetence. He also proves his case beyond a reasonable doubt.
Among other things, President Obama’s conduct has hung a remarkable number of prominent supporters out to dry. Among them I count Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Martin Dempsey (military action against Syria is just so damn complicated), Secretary of State Kerry (hey, he didn’t use the word “quick”) and French President François Hollande (he didn’t use the word “quick” either, but he was thinking it and now he’s thinking something else). Have we ever seen a performance by an American president quite like it?
