Tehran calling

The current frontman for the Iranian regime is one Hassan Rouhani. Rouhani is a skilled proponent of Iran’s nuclear program. He has an impressive track record of covering for it with outside parties such as the IAEA.

Following up on his Syrian diplomatic triumph, President Obama is ready to bring us more of the same, and worse, with Iran. Rouhani is the perfect partner for Obama. Obama wants to do nothing about Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons and Rouhani wants to accommodate his need for meaningless negotiations that may lead to a meaningless agreement. Iran is bent on the acquisition of nuclear weapons and if Obama has his way, Iran will get them without further impediments.

The nature of the Iranian regime is what matters and the nature of the regime remains unchanged. Not one bit. Isn’t that obvious? If it is not obvious to Obama, we can only revert to Saul Bellow’s timeless adage: “A great deal of intelligence can be invested in ignorance when the need for illusion is deep.”

It is a cliché to observe that Iran has been at war with the United States since 1979, but it is one of those clichés that has the virtue of being true. Iran has relentlessly pursued its war against the United States across time and space. Lee Smith has published a particularly compelling Tablet column full of timely reminders: “Iran uses terror threats to successfully deter US military action.” Please check it out.
