Retailed with relentlessly repeated falsehoods, Obamacare is an enormous engine of destruction. I’ve noted some of the destructive elements in the “Wages of Obamacare” series of posts that is to be continued. Today I want to initiate a series on the falsehoods with which Obamacare was foisted on the American people.
If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan, Obama asserted over and over. Michelle Malkin found that this falsehood just hit home as she documented the termination of her chosen family health insurance plan. The loss of her plan as a result of Obamacare directly violates one of Obama’s many promises about Obamacare, all of which will be proven false many times over in the fullness of time. “Obama lied,” as Michelle puts it, “my health plan died.”
Another falsehood: That Obamacare will reduce health care premiums by $2500 per family per year. Chris Conover addresses this one here. Avik Roy has more here (don’t miss the video). Obama appears to have learned something about the power of repetition — of repeating big, outrageous falsehoods — from someone somewhere along the line.
And one more: “I want to be very clear,” said Obama on July 18, 2009, in a weekly address to the nation. “I will not sign on to any health plan that adds to our deficits over the next decade.” He said it again at a town hall in Shaker Height, Ohio, five days later: “And I mean it,” and again before a joint session of Congress two months later — “period.”
Here I turn to Charles Blahous and his paper on “The fiscal consequences of the Affordable Care Act” and this excellent summary: “Over the coming decade (2012-2021), the ACA is expected to increase net federal spending by more than $1.15 trillion, and to add more than $340 billion and as much as $530 billion to federal deficits over the same period, and increasing amounts thereafter” (footnote omitted).
In their own way the willfulness and magnitude of the falsehoods with which Obama sold Obamacare are shocking. We’ve become inured to it, but it is true. This is my refrain: If only we had a free press, Obamacare would be a bloody, unrelenting scandal, like Abu Ghraib, or Watergate. As it is, it is only business as usual for liberals and liberalism.
