The Hinderaker-Ward Experience, Episode 56: Highway Through the Danger Zone, With C.J. Box

Today Brian Ward and I recorded another Saturday edition of the Hinderaker-Ward Experience. We talked about the shutdown and the debt ceiling, why the two issues are entirely different, and whether the GOP will be able to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Also Obamacare: is it an unfolding disaster, or the final realization of the Founders’ concept of “pursuit of happiness?” We anointed a Loon of the Week–you know it’s a loony week when Nancy Pelosi is only the runner-up–and awarded This Week In Gatekeeping.

And we were joined by novelist C.J. Box, author of the spectacularly popular Joe Pickett books, as well as stand-alone works like his latest, The Highway. If you haven’t read The Highway, you should; it is about a serial killer and pretty intense, but just about impossible to put down. And–as I said on the show–if, one-quarter of the way into the book, you think you know what is going to happen, you are wrong. There are more than one shocking twists.

We also talked about the next Pickett novel, which C.J. has just finished, called Stone Cold. It will be out in March. And we asked C.J. what it is like to be a conservative in the world of book publishing (just fine, for him anyway, was the answer). Finally, few people know more about the National Park Service than C.J. Box, so we got his thoughts on the surprising–to us, not to him–Gestapo-like behavior we have seen from the NPS over the last two weeks.

All in all, it is a very fun show.

You can listen to the podcast by playing it right here, or you can go to Ricochet to download or subscribe to the podcast in various ways, or you can subscribe on iTunes or elsewhere. Or you can use Stitcher. There are many ways to experience the Hinderaker-Ward Experience, but I think the best is by subscribing on iTunes. That way, you never have to worry about missing an episode.

NOTE: The iTunes address has changed, and the old one no longer works. Don’t ask me why. I don’t think the old feed works anymore, so if you haven’t been getting HWX episodes automatically from iTunes, that is the reason. Please subscribe at the new feed, which is linked above!

Finally, we want to thank our friends at Encounter Books for sponsoring the Hinderaker-Ward Experience. If you follow the link and buy a book, you can enter the code “RICOCHET” at checkout to get an additional 15% discount.
