A member of the Federalist Society, that is. You may recall that Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee are rather big on this form of what goes under the name of McCarthyism.
I’ll be attending the Federalist Society 2013 National Lawyers Convention in Washington on November 14-16. The convention features the Federalist Society’s traditionally stellar lineup of speakers and programs, with Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas at the top of the card. I’ll be attending the convention to participate in the Professional Responsibility and Legal Education section’s panel on the morning of November 16. The subject of the panel is “Regulation of the Legal Profession in the 21st Century: Should Professional Regulation Favor Social Policy over Client Protection?” Professors Thomas Morgan and Alan Morrison of George Washington University will be on the panel along with Federalist Society Pro Bono Director Margaret A. Little. Minnesota Supreme Court Justice David Stras will serve as moderator.
I will be talking about our experience in Minnesota with the Minnesota Supreme Court’s task force report on racial bias in the judicial system and the court’s subsequent imposition of an elimination of bias requirement on our continuing legal education obligation. I think what I have to offer is a sort of case study that bears on the subject of the panel, or so I hope. Professor Morgan is my counterpart on the panel, advocating the elimination of bias requirement as an element of professional responsibility. The other panelists will be discussing the move toward mandatory pro bono work, Professor Morrison in favor and Ms. Little against. If you will be attending the convention I hope you’ll think about dropping in on the panel the morning of November 16.
