Ten days that shook the United States

I took a look back at the current crisis of illegal Central American minors in the Weekly Standard article “Disorder at the border,” published this past Friday in the new issue of the magazine. In retrospect, I think that the events of the preceding days fixed these issues in the public mind and culminated in President Obama’s notable address following his meeting in Dallas with Governor Perry.

Obama had resisted the meeting with Perry, as he resisted visiting the border along the Rio Grande. In Dallas and Austin for big-buck fundraisers with his conspicuously wealthy friends, Obama was ultimately shamed into the meeting. Given Obama’s stubbornness and vanity, the meeting signified the White House’s perception of the weight of the moment.

I posted a video of Obama’s remarks here. The White House has posted the text of Obama’s remarks here. In his remarks Obama deployed an army of his overworked straw men to plump for $3.7 billion in emergency funding.

I say that Obama’s remarks are noteworthy because they all but declare that Obama will take no action to stanch the flood. Byron York offers an explanation in “Why Obama won’t take strong action in border crisis.”
