The conservative advocacy group American Commitment has entered a national video contest organized by the left-wing outfits MoveOn and MAYDAY.US. What’s going on here? Bear with me.
In an email announcing the contest, MoveOn urged applicants to “make a 30-second ad to wake up America to the crisis of big money in our politics.” In its call for submissions, MoveOn declared: “The scale of the problem is clear. The corporate wing of the Supreme Court under Chief Justice Roberts keeps insisting that money is speech and corporations are people. Shadowy, unregulated front groups are pouring unprecedented amounts of money into elections.”
American Commitment has answered the call with a video starring Tom Steyer, perhaps the biggest left-wing gazillionaire funding Democratic campaigns in 2014. He is certainly the biggest hypocrite funding Democratic campaigns this year. American Commitment’s video contest submission is aptly titled “America’s biggest hypocrite.” The video is below.
American Commitment president Phil Kerpen explains: “The winning entry in this contest should be about America’s number one fatcat campaign contributor, Tom Steyer—and we have submitted an entry to shine a spotlight on him and on the role hypocritical liberal billionaire contributors play in stoking feigned outrage about conservative donors.” Kerpen adds regarding the contest: “We’ve looked at the other entries and are confident that if this is an honest contest and not a partisan charade, our entry will easily win.”
Steyer made his billions off cheap foreign coal and running hedge funds overseas to avoid U.S. taxes. He has pledged to raise $100 million to make “climate change” a top issue in this year’s elections. The American Commitment video calls out Steyer for his truly epic hypocrisy. That he funds false ads in a bad cause aggravates his offense.
All of the videos are posted on the contest home page here. Now here’s the beauty part. As of this moment, American Commitment’s video is winning the contest. “America’s biggest hypocrite” leads its next closest competitor by a wide margin, with six days of voting to go.
