John Holdren
Remember how Obama promised in his first inaugural address to “restore science to its rightful place”? Beyond this gratuitous dig at the outgoing Bush administration, it is curious to see that Obama’s idea of scientific authority is the egregious John Holdren, whom Obama chose as his science adviser.
For Halloween our pal Rob Bradley of the Institute for Energy Research compiled a list of Holdren’s greatest hits over at the indispensable Master Resource blog, such as:
“Some form of ecocatastrophe, if not thermonuclear war, seems almost certain to overtake us before the end of the [twentieth] century.” – John Holdren and Paul Ehrlich(1971)
“As University of California physicist John Holdren has said, it is possible that carbon-dioxide climate-induced famines could kill as many as a billion people before the year 2020.” (As quoted by Ehrlich, 1986.)
“[Our] “gloomy prognosis” [requires] organized evasive action: population control, limitation of material consumption, redistribution of wealth, transitions to technologies that are environmentally and socially less disruptive than today’s, and movement toward some kind of world government” (Ehrlich and Holdren, 1977.)
No one in the press ever thinks to ask the White House if Obama shares the views of his science adviser.
There’s more at the site, plus an archive of past greatest hits Bradley has collected and collated over the years. Rob has been Holdren’s nemesis for a good long time. Holdren has consistently refused all invitations to debate his views.
