Sunday morning coming down

Live From Daryl’s House originated online but is now carried by the Palladia cable channel. The show features Daryl Hall and his highly proficient band playing with various musical guests. The whole series, now running to more than 80 episodes, is archived online here.

I love the series and thought some readers might find it of interest. For an excellent sample of what it has to offer, including the show’s recurring segment celebrating good food, I recommend episode 83 with Darius Rucker. It is delightful from beginning to end.

Before discovering the series, I hadn’t heard of the artist known as Cee Lo Green. Shawn Colvin turned his song “Crazy” (written and recorded by him and friend under the name Gnarls Barkley) into something of a personal anthem, so much so that I thought she had written the song. As it turns out, however, it’s just one of her phenomenal covers.

Live From Daryl’s House episode 52 with Cee Lo Green has several highlights. The version of the Hall & Oates hit “I Can’t Go For That” with Mr. Green sharing the lead vocal combines Philly soul with an undercurrent of anger that gives voice to my feelings. I’m a latecomer to the series; the video below is up to nearly 1,000,000 views. If you appreciate popular music, I hope you will enjoy this as much as I have.

Daryl Hall is 68 years old; John Oates is 65. They are still performing and still the most successful duo in pop music history. They occasionally reunite to perform their hits, some of which (like “I Can’t Go For That”) are more than listenable, but they are not an oldies act. They remain terrific performing musicians. As for Hall, see the video above. As for Oates, you may want to check out the recent installment of American Routes with him. (Rating: I loved it.)
