We’re Not All Charlie

“I am Charlie” has been ubiquitous on signs and in hashtags since the Paris terrorist attacks. But not everyone identifies with the victims of the Islamic murders; some blame them for provoking their own murders, or see the attacks as an opportunity to ride their usual hobbyhorses. And then there is al Jazeera. Leaked emails published at National Review suggest that the sympathies of those who manage the Qatar-based news network were at least halfway with the terrorists.

I, personally, am not a big fan of Charlie Hebdo. But when someone commits mass murder, the appropriate question is never, Did he have a point? As Hugh Hewitt has been saying, the cartoons are really irrelevant. We may or may not all be Charlie, but we do all have a stake in defeating Islamic extremism.
