In which we mourn the passing of Rouhani’s mother

As the Obama administration arrives at the verge of a catastrophic deal to bless the bulk of Iran’s vast nuclear infrastructure, the talks adjourned yesterday in light of the death of the mother of Iranian President Rouhani. It is reported that “the negotiations had been tentatively extended to go into Saturday. But the Iranian delegation decided to depart for home to allow negotiators, including Mr Zarif and Hossein Fereydoon, a brother of Iranian president Hassan Rouhani, to attend the funeral of Mr Rouhani’s mother.”

Obama administration officials representing the United States are of course all choked up over the death of Rouahni’s mother. This is the formal statement put out yesterday in the name of Secretary of State Kerry:

We extend our deepest condolences to the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Dr. Hassan Rouhani and his family on the passing of his mother, Mrs. Sakineh Peivandi. Such a loss is especially hard coming on the eve of Nowruz, traditionally a time when families gather together in joy and hope. We share in his grief and that of his brother, Presidential Special Advisor Hossein Fereydoun, who has been participating in the talks in Lausanne, and we keep their family in our thoughts.

Associated Press diplomatic reporter Matthew Lee inquired about the expressions of sympathy at the State Department press briefing yesterday (video below).

The Iranian regime is responsible for the murder and maiming of hundreds of Americans. It is the most active state sponsor of terror on the planet. Stephen Hayes has reported, most recently in yesterday’s Weekly Standard editorial, that Iran has even built a cooperative relationship with al Qaeda.

Imprecations for the death of the Supreme Leader, the Assembly of Experts of the Leadership and all of their agents, including Rouhani, would be more appropriate than the administration’s condolences on the death of Rouhani’s mother. (Ali Alfoneh and Reuel Marc Gerecht, incidentlly, compiled the file on Rouhani in an excellent Weekly Standard article.)

The administration is hellbent on enhancing the Iranian regime’s power to inflict death and destruction on its enemies. Those deemed enemies by the Iranian regime most certainly include the United States, whose death the leaders of the regime publicly call for on a regular basis. Not that there’s anything wrong with that in the eyes of the Obama administration, of course.

We are far into the tertiary stage of appeasement. The obsequious treacle of Kerry’s statement provides another small piece of evidence symptomatic of the condition.
