The adage is credited to diverse authors. I can’t sort out the responsibility for it, but I do want to quote it (or a variant of it): “Sincerity: if you can fake it, you’ve got it made.” The adage has special application to the field of politics. The ability to fake sincerity doesn’t guarantee success, but it certainly helps. Think Bill Clinton. (He never fooled me, but he is a champion faker.)
Madam Hillary can do a lot of things. Among the things she can’t do, however, is fake sincerity. She oozes inauthenticity. She strives mightily to impersonate a normal human being, yet it’s obvious that she’s faking. She may as well be phoning it in from the set of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
In its cold open this past weekend, Saturday Night Live anticipated Madam Hillary’s announcement of her presidential candidacy yesterday (video below, about five minutes long). The skit is up and down in terms of humor and bite. Nevertheless, in my opinion, Kate McKinnon nails Madam Hillary’s fakery with genuine insight. McKinnon seems to me to illuminate the subject of her comedy in this sketch.
